With solid stamps, colorful backgrounds are so easy to make! In this stamping tutorial video, I’ll show you how to create a fun bubbly background in Subtles colors, as we make a cheerful encouragement card using the Eclectic Expressions and Blossoming Basket Sale-A-Bration stamp sets.
Bubbly Background Blossoming Basket Card
One of the first techniques I learned as a new stamper is what my then-demonstrator called ‘shadow stamping’. Essentially, it’s using solid stamps with the random stamping technique to create a colorful background of overlapping shapes, and then over-stamping the background with a scene in black ink.
These days ‘shadow stamping’ means something entirely different. But this old technique — whatever it’s called now — is still super fun. It’s also an easy way to add color to outline images, without having to actually color them in. So today I’ve made a cheerful encouragement card, along with a short stamping tutorial video to show you how to do it.
To make the bubbly background on this card, I used a sweet combination of Soft Subtles colors:
These colors are so cheerful, and contrast beautifully with the black-inked images!
I started by stamping a layer of circles on Whisper White cardstock in Pink Pirouette ink, and then added three more layers of circles — one of each color — right on top of it.
The circle stamp from Eclectic Expressions (Sale-A-Bration 2018) was perfect for doing this. The distressing that’s built into this stamp makes the stamped circles look like they have highlights, just like real bubbles do.
Once the background piece was complete, I over-stamped the bubbles with the basket and butterfly stamps from Blossoming Basket (Sale-A-Bration 2018) in Basic Black ink.
So that the black-inked images would stand out more, I matted this piece with Basic Black cardstock, and then layered it on a Pool Party card base. Then I stamped the ‘Here for You’ sentiment from Blossoming Basket in Wisteria Wonder ink, and matted that piece, too, with Basic Black cardstock. To accent the sentiment, I just added a couple pink enamel dots.
Colorful overlapping shape backgrounds like this one are super easy to make with solid stamps! Although I used a circle stamp on this card, you could substitute any solid stamps, like squares, stars, flowers, etc., to create a similar effect.
