Stampin’ Up! strives to always give stampers the highest quality products to craft with. So while revamping the color lines for the new Annual Catalogue, they also redesigned the ink pads. What’s changed in the new Stampin’ Up! ink pads? Let’s take a look!
New Stampin’ Up! Ink Pads – What’s Changed?
1. Same Size Foam Pad in a Smaller Plastic Case
First, the new Stampin’ Up! ink pads are about 1/2 inch shorter in length than the old ones. However, this change only affects the cases — the plastic parts on the outside.
On the inside, the foam pads are just as long and wide as they always were. So basically Stampin’ Up! is using less plastic now to make the cases, which is really great for the environment!
2. Lower Rise on the Foam Pad
One thing that has changed about the foam pad is that it doesn’t rise as high above the surface of the case.
This means you don’t need to press hard to ink your stamps. Just tap them lightly against the foam pad for great ink coverage.
So far I’m finding that — when I tap lightly — this lower pad helps prevent ink from getting on parts of stamps where I don’t want it. Also, when inking stamps on the Stamparatus, I don’t get as much ink on the clear plates. All this adds up to fewer ‘mess-ups’, and less wasted ink. Hooray!
3. Better Stackability
The new Stampin’ Up! ink pads don’t have ‘feet’ like the old ones did. Instead, they’re flat on the bottom. They also have tiny pegs in the bottom corners, that match up to little divots on the lids, so you can stack the new ink pads together. This means you can fit more of them in less space — yay!
Now since the new Stampin’ Up! ink pads don’t have ‘feet’, they don’t fit snugly in the Color Caddy. So that tool is retiring. But Stampin’ Up! is working on a replacement, and I’ll update you when it’s available. Stay tuned!
TIP: If you already have the Color Caddy, and want to use it to store the new Stampin’ Up! ink pads, just be sure to turn it slowly so the pads don’t slide out.
4. Easier to Open and Close
My favorite feature of the new Stampin’ Up! ink pads is the way they open and close. You just put your thumb in the notch on the front…
… and pop the lid open like you’re opening a compact. So easy!
Also like with compacts, the ink pad lids stay attached, so you don’t lose them. Although you can slide-lock these pads so they take up less space on your craft table, you don’t have to, to use them.
To close the new ink pads, just slide the pad back if you locked it into place, and then snap the lid closed. Again, like with a compact, make sure you hear the snap, so you know it’s closed.
5. Tighter Seal When Closed
The way in which the new Stampin’ Up! ink pads open and close also provides a more air-tight seal. This is helpful in preventing air and dust from getting into your ink pads.
6. Color Labels for the Insides of the Pads
When an ink pad is open, figuring out what color it is can be challenging. So the new Stampin’ Up! ink pads each include a color label for the inside of the pad.
You’ll find this new sticker label on the bottom of each ink pad, alongside the one for the front outside edge of the pad. Just peel it off, and stick it inside the little well at the edge of your open ink pad.
7. Defoamer in the Ink
With some of the old ink pads, the ink would bubble a bit when you reinked them. Since bubbles make it hard to get good ink coverage on a stamp, Stampin’ Up! added a defoamer to the ink.
So what does this mean for your older reinkers? Are they still useable?
According to Stampin’ Up!, you can use older reinkers on the new ink pads, and the ink colors will match, like always. But to get the full benefit of the defoamer, reink your new Stampin’ Up! ink pads with the new ink refills that have defoamer in them.
So what do you think about the new Stampin’ Up! ink pads? Are you as excited about the changes as I am? I especially love the new space-saving features, and the easier way these new ink pads open and close!
